Josiah Thomas  is first listed in the Nacogdoches Archives in the year 1835.  He joined Capt.Timmon’s Mounted Gunman in 1838.  In 1841 he joined Capt. Gage’s Minute Men.  By 1848 he had acquired 2952 acres of land in Nacogdoches,Texas.  The box body is a block of wood curved to fit the wearers body and has 10 cartridge holes .  The cartridge box holes are of .54 cal. which fits the 1841."Mississippi Rifle". The top flap and three back carrying straps are leather with a Texas Star carved of the front flap.  On the inside of the flap is written in period ink"Josiah Thomas his box January 25th,1847".   Early Texas  identified items like this very rarely come up for sale. I have all the proper muster rolls and archive papers that will go with the cartridge box.
