A good looking set of Federalist period shoe buckles in their original leather case. The back of each bucket is stamped” Boulton & Smith” over Patent. We can date this set as the patent was granted to James Smith in 1792 and Matthew Boulton died in 1809 . The case is a little warped and one of it’s latches is missing but still a rare 200+ years old set.
