This Doglock Indian Trade musketoon was made by John Whately It’s signed Whately on the lock and has his initials IW on the 21 1/4″ barrel . The thick walled swamped barrel is .90 cal. The sideplate is in the form of a trade serpent .The trigger guard is nailed to the stock and not inlet. There are seven square head nails securing the sheet brass buttplate. The action works well. John Whately worked from the American Revolution into the 1820’s and was known for his Indian Trade Rifles such as this one. He also made a special rifle for Tecumseh. There’s a similar gun pictured on page 190 of George Neumann’s “Battlefield Weapons of the American Revolution’. Also there’s one listed on my website under Sold items on page 21.
