A really beautiful long Fowler, actually one of the nicest that I’ve ever owned . It  also comes with quite a bit of history.  The gun is a true American Fowler with a 51" barrel that has a raised rib that extends from the breech to the front sight.   The stock is American maple and in beautiful shape with no replaced wood. The lock is correct for the period with a detached pan. The furniture is brass and has a wonderful mellow patina.  The heritage on the gun is outstanding.   It was used by Capt. Bennet Wood in the French & Indian War as a Captain in the Granville County, North Carolina militia.  During the Revolutionary War he was a member of the Committee of Safety but his son who was also named Bennet enlisted in  Lt.Basot’s Company and served under Gen.Francis (The Swamp Fox) Marion.  I think it’s safe to assume that he would have taken his father gun when he went off to war.  This is starting to sound like the script of the movie "The Patriot" but it’s true and I’ve got the documents to back it up.  The Wood family were true American Patriots and the grandson ,who was also a Bennet ,enlisted in the 13th North Carolina Infantry and fought for the Confederacy.
