This beautiful musket was made by John Hills -Goshen ,Ct. and may well have been his personal musket.  As he was not only a gun maker but also a soldier who fought in both the French & Indian War but also The American Revolution.  I have a large file on him that will go with the musket detailing his service in Capt.Savage’s Co. in the F & I War and under Gen. Israel Putnam’s command in the Revolution. This musket was made strickly for military use having both a bayonet lug under the 41 1/2" barrel and holes for sling swivels in the trigger guard and forestock. The forestock hole having been filled I assume after the war when no longer needed. The semi-pointed breech tang has a groove in it’s upper  elevated surface, which serves as a rear sight. This elevated integral tang rear sight is something that is only seen on musket made by  members of the Hills family  .  The family of gunmakers and patriots consisted of father Benoni, John , and brother Medad  all of whom saw service in the Revolution.  Benoni  in the Drum and Fife.  Medad  was Capt. and later promoted to Colonel raised his own Company in Goshen.  He saw much action especially in the New York City area.
This wonderful musket has some really great details to it.  Including some beautiful carving around the barrel tang and an engraved Indian arrow and feather on the butt tang.  It also has a front sight which is very rarely seen at this time. The stock is a gorgeous curly maple with double incised carved lines running the lenght of the forestock. The furniture is all American sheet brass. Everything on the musket retains a beautiful untouched patina.
John Hills moved to Charlotte,Vt. in 1785.  I know of two musket with his name and Charlotte,Vermont signed on the butt tang. Norm Flaydermann owned one and I use to own the other. There are some known Medad muskets but they all have mixed parts.  This is the ONLY Rev.War musket that I know of that is completely a Hill product.  I also beleive because of the extra refinements incorporated in this musket that it was carried by him.  Impossible to improve on for the Rev.War collector.
