This 1873 Springfield rifle serial #44753 started life as a rifle and was later shortened to carbine length. It shows signs of Indian use with the stock having been shaved . Also, the buttstock shows signs of having been wrapped in hide, which is evidenced by the discoloration of the wood due to the acid in the hide. I've had this gun in my personal collection for many years and left the auction tag on it as it states that it was taken from a captured Apache Indian just before he was sent to Fort Sill , Oklahoma. This is where Geronimo and his men were sent after they were captured in Skeleton Canyon, A.T in 1886.
