Civil War Maritime items are seldom seen for sale and this is a little gem. It ‘s a Moore derringer which is finely engraved and silver plated. The backstrap is inscribed " Capt. Rainer " and the left frame is engraved with the Ship "Vidette". Captain Wm. Rainer joined the N.Y Marine Light Artillery on 10/22/61 and saw action mostly in North Carolina until the unit was desolved in 3/63. He then went on to Captain the gunboat Vidette.which continued to see action in the Carolina’s. The pistol itself is very attractive with beautiful engraving and about 30-40% of it’s original silver remaining. The Vidette went on to have a major collision after the War in San Francisco. Also , it was hit by a Meteor in 1885. A pretty neat piece with alot of history.
