Mdl. 1777 French Pistol – Gettysburg

Gettysburg Relic  Sold

This is one of the neatest Gettysburg relics you’ll ever find.  The old tag states”  Confederate Conversion Found at Gettysburg   F(T).S Hunter ” , not sure if it’s a F or a T. The obverse states” Confederate  From Gettysburg Battlefield  Single Shot French Pistol.  This old tag has been on the pistol since when the pistol was found as the verdigris from the moisture in the brass frame ran down the string and colored the tag blue on one side.  Obviously a private owned pistol that dates back to the Rev.War.  In studying the pistol it’s obvious what happened to it. The muzzle caught a projectile which bent it in and rendered it unserviceable . Whether it was shot out of the owner’s hand or just thrown away as useless ,we’ll never know. It ended up on the ground of the Battlefield where it was run over by a heavy wheel (cannon or wagon) which bent the hammer over the barrel.  It’s not all that unusual for a Confederate soldier to carry a sidearm from home. It may originally  have belonged to a relative of his (Grandfather ?) from the Rev.War.Sold
