A well worn mdl. 1859 Sharps carbine that saw service in both the Civil War and the Indian Wars.  It is identified by serial # 55741 in Sharps Carbines and Rifles by Coates & McAulay as being issued to Pvt. Thomas Gourley of â€‹Co. G  1st Maryland Cav. He saw action in some of the bloodiest Civil War battles including 2nd Manassas , Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Brandy Station, Spotsylvania Court House and was wounded at Deep Bottom. â€‹ After the War the carbine was reconditioned and converted to .50-70 CF Cal. with 3 groove rifling. The rifling appears pretty good but could use a good cleaning. These guns were sent West and issued to one of the ten cavalry units participating in the Indian Wars. A very Historic piece!
