This is a pretty nice example of Carlos Gove's work. He worked in St. Joseph, Missouri 1852-54,  Council Bluffs, Iowa 1840-52 and 1854-62.  He built rifles and tomahawks mostly for the Rocky Mountain western trade. In 1862 he moved to Denver, Colorado were he worked his trade until his death in 1884.  This rifle is signed C. Gove on the top barrel flat. It also exhibits classic Carlos Gove designs such as stars on both front and rear sights. I've also seen this star design on some of his Tomahawks. Also, it exhibits a pronounced projection at the bottom of the pewter nose cap where the ramrod enters the stock.  The rifle is 14 LBS. with a 34" barrel which is 1 1/2" across it's flat.  It has been sleeved down to .35 cal. from it's original .54 cal . Many of these mountain rifles were later sleeved down to  be used as deer rifles rather than a Grizzly bear guns. The stock is made of curly maple with a rather unique check piece.  The lock has a double set trigger and is signed T & B.   Overall a very attractive western rifle by one of the most famous western makers.
