I really don't know where to start with this great set of guns. For starters they're both identified to Sheriif J.C.B. Harkness who was first elected Sheriff of Frio County ,Texas in 1878. He served five terms leaving office in 1900. Frio Co. was pretty wild at the time and I've accumulated a 2" thick file on him and his closest friend ex. Texas Ranger Big Foot Wallace. However, Harkness was no stranger to danger having served in the 11th Alabama Inf. during the Civil War. He enlisted as a private in June of 1861 and achived the rank of Captain by wars end. He saw action at many of the major battles to include the 2nd Manassas,Sharpsburg,Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, The Crator, Petersburg and Appomattox.
The pistol is a 1860 Colt #183328 converted to cartridge and has been specially modified by reversing the ejector housing so that the rod head is on top. This enables you to eject the casings without having to take you eyes off your target. The pistols backstrap in engraved Sheriff J.C.B. Harkness and has a beautiful set of ivory grips with a mellow yellow patina. The loading gate is long gone and a rear sight was added. to the barrel. The 1873 Winchester is a .38-40 cal. and is also engraved Sheriff J.C.B. Harkness. It was shipped from the factory in 1887 and comes with a factory letter. Both guns are untouched and have wonderful patina's. Also included it a copy of a charcoal sketched picture of Sheriff Harkness that was done by one of his prisoners and now hangs in the present sheriffs office. The picture depicts a very serious man not to be trivaled with. I don't believe there's another Texas grouping as complete as this which not only includes his Colt and Wincester but also his picture.
