This old .44-40 cal. Merwin is in well worn and used condition as it should be seeing as it was carried by a man who wasn’t afraid to you it. Marshal Duggan was an Irishman with a quick temper and a quick gun. I’ve included some info. on him and Leadville in my picture section. There were two famous mining towns in the Old West . One was Tombstone,AT. and the other was Leadville, Colo.. The infamous Doc.Holiday hung out in both. Mart Duggan was handy with his gun even before he got to Leadville having shot a man in a gunfight in the streets of Georgetown,Colo. When he arrived in Leadville in 1878 he was immediately elected as the 3rd Marshal of the town. The first having been shot to death and the second ran out of town. He immediately commenced the job of cleaning up the Town. He was dismissed in Feb.1879 after a drinking binge but was immediately hired back when it became obvious that he was the only one who could bring law and order to the town. In April of 1879 when his term expired Marshal Duggan decided to move to Flint, Mich. with his wife and settle in a peaceful environment. However, by December of 1879 the town of Leadville had reverted back to it’s old ways and Mart Duggan was sent for again. By April of 1880 the town was back under control and Duggan refused reappointment. In Nov. of 1880 he killed a miner named Louis Lamb in a gunfigtht and was acquitted on the grounds of self-defense. He moved to Douglas City, Colo. in 1882 where he took the position of deputy. He did his job well and kept the peace but on April 9th 1888 all that changed. Deputy Duggan became involved in argument with two gamblers at the Texas House . On his way home he was shot in the back of the head and died at 11:00 that morning. Hope this explains why this Historic pistol is in such a used and worn condition. Sold
