This is truly an awesome gun. For starters it’s one of if not the oldest Hudson Valley Fowlers I’ve ever seen. I would date it mid to late 17th century as it has all very early features. Such as the Doglock , very sparse wood carving and a Serpentine sideplate. Also it is extremely long with a 6′ barrel and O/A Length of 7 I/2 ‘. I beleive the barrel is of English origin as I can make out two English proofs and the barrel makers intials. The barrel also had a rear sight at one time but was taken off during it’s period of use and a piece of iron or lead was dovetailed in. It looks like it’s still in it’s original Flintlock configuration . The pan was replaced during it’s period of use as most of them were do to their burning through the bottom. The wood looks pretty good and the only spot that I can see were there was any work was a piece of wood that was replaced right behind the barrel tang. This is a very attractive gun and as you can see I’ve got it hanging over my fireplace.
