J.P.Gemmer is a name that will always be associated with the fur trade and the old West. He took over the famous Hawkins Rifle Shop in1862. The gun is signed J.P.Gemmer-St.Louis on both locks and the 26" barrel rib. This particular shotgun came out of South Dakota. The engraving on it is spectacular and there's a pearl inlay at the tip of the forestock. There are no proof marks under the barrel so I beleive this shotgun was made in the Gemmer shop. The buttstock exhibits some weathering and has a minor period repair which is almost unnoticable. The action is tight and crisp and the barrel locks up with no wabble. A nice addition to any Western Collection.
