Peter Gonter  worked in Lancaster, Pa. from  1768 to 1818.  He's one of the most sought after of the early Lancaster makers.  The lock is signed Dreppart, who was also a Lancaster maker. This is a early rifle with a width of 1 1/2" across it's curly maple  butt stock.   It's .54 cal. rifled barrel is 44 1/2" long and signed by P. Gonter  on it's top flat.    The rifle is a take-down which is a very rare feature for a 18th century rifle. The patchbox has a hidden lid release on the toe of the stock. The curly maple stock is beautiful with only one repair that I can see which is at the rear of the lock and blends nicely. The ramrod appears to be original to the rifle. A really outstanding rifle!
