This is one of the 5000 mdl. 1871 Remington's submitted to the U.S govt. in 1871 -1872 for trials in hopes of winning a govt. contract. Their competition was the mdl. 1860 Colt Richards Conversion .44 CF and the S & W American #3 American 1st mdl. .44 S&W . These pistols were all issued to Cavalry units on the Western frontier and saw very harsh service. Eventually the Colt won out which lead to the mdl. 1873 Colt S/A.
This pistol is in outstanding condition which I would rate as Excellent+. The bore is beautiful and appears to never have been fired. Worthy of an advanced Western or U.S Martial collection.
