Mdl. 1877 trapdoor carbines are rare and this one is doulbly so as it was issued to a famous Indian Scout Squint Eye. He would also become a talent artist later on in his career . His Cheyenne name was Tichkematse while his U.S army name was 'Squint Eye'.  Please refer to cover sheet photo. I've got a very thick file on him including a Springfield research letter, his history and copies of many of his ledger drawings. The factory letter states that the carbine was first issued to Scout Lance Sgt. "Squint Eye " in August 1885  and then issued a second time to Lance Sgt. "Squint Eye"  Sept. 1886. I'm assuming that the carbine was sent back the first time for a repair and and refurbished. He acquired this carbine while stationed at Ft. Supply, I.T. The carbine is in very good condition with a beautiful shiney bore. It's got a minor repair to the wood by the barrel tang which consists of securing the original wood back in place. This was usually the result of firing a rifle cartridge rather the the correct carbine cartridge. I don't recall ever seeing another  factory letter stating a direct issue to a U.S Indian Scout. When I discussed this with Wayne Gagner (Editor & Cheif Researcher ) at the time he said he had never seen one either. This carbine has been in my personal collection for a dozen years.
