This is one of the original Dutch muskets contracted for by  Benjamin Franklin .  They all have the Generalitett (Government ownership) marked barrels like this musket.  However, this is the first one I’ve ever seen with the United States  brand in the stock.  When George Washington issued the order in late 1777 to mark any area that would except a brand designating government ownership the first marking was  "United States" branded in the stock.  After that is was abbreviated to the "U. States".  The musket is all correct and shows evidence of being carried on horseback with wear on the forestock from the horse’s neck . Also the ramrod has worn through the forestock in front of the trigger guard. A really impossible musket to find in any condition.
