This is a really attractive piece of American Folk Art.  Seaman made these ditty box's from whalebone for their sweethearts while they were at sea for extended periods of time. This box has a early American eagle on it's lid and a fish on it's bottom.  The lid hinge it made from copper as are the two bands that hold it together. It is 2 1/2"x 1 1/2"x 7/8".  The box has taken on a beautiful rich patina over the years.
